Co-taught Reading with Mrs. Brosome

This year I have the pleasure of working with Mrs. Brosome, our school's literacy specialist in my 6th Hour Reading Class! She and I will be co-teaching reading this year, and I am so excited to be able to learn from her expertise.

Curriculum Overview

Throughout reading class, we will be focusing on pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading strategies.  Some of these strategies include:

Previewing
Predicting
Making Connections
Questioning
Visualizing
Recalling/Retelling
Sequencing
Inferencing
Determining Importance in Text
Summarizing
Synthesis/Analyzing
In order to practice these strategies, we will read and study short stories, novels, poetry, plays, etc.

Daily Routine in Reading Class

-S.Q.U.I.R.T.-Everyday when students enter into reading class they are expected to sit and read for 10 minutes. We call this time S.Q.U.I.R.T., which stands for Sustained, Quiet, Uninterrupted, Reading Time. After 10 minutes of reading, student will then write a short summary in their reading logs.

- Root Word- After S.Q.U.I.R.T., our class then focuses their attention on the classical root word of the day. The classical root is apart of a school wide vocabulary program. For example, the classical root of week one is Monos, meaning one. Students then get a different word each day that has the root monos in it, such as monotheism or monotony.

The remaining time in class will be spent practicing the above reading
strategies.
