Social Studies

The 2008- 2009 school year is the start of a new curriculum for 8th Grade Social Studies. In the past 8th Grade was dedicated to American History from Colonization through Industrialization, as well as a unit on Genocide.

This year we are changing it up! First semester will focus on different aspects of the social sciences including civics, the Constitution and economics. Second semester will then focus on 20th Century American History.

I LOVE History and I am so excited to be able to teach this aspect of History to my students!

First Semester

Civics- The essential question that we will focus on for the Civics unit is, What are my duties and responsibilities as a U.S. Citizen? This year we will also be looking closely at the 2008 Presidential Election!

Constitution-  Essential question: What responsibilities does the Government have to protect and serve the rights of individual citizens?

Economics- Essential question: How much should individuals participate in our economy in order to be considered a good citizen?

Second Semester

As students study the 20th Century, they will constantly be tying in the essential question, "What makes a productive citizen?" In the first semester students learn what it means to be a citizen of this country, and in the second semester they will study how citizens like them shaped history.
